STERIS University Partners with Sterile Processing Champion on Training Materials

STERIS University, an educational portal of STERIS Corporation offering continuing education for healthcare industry professionals, and Michele DeMeo, CRCST, CSPDT, have partnered to offer the DeMeo Legacy Series of training and motivational materials. DeMeo is a widely known expert on central service department optimization and sterile processing best practices.

We are honored to be able to enrich our curriculum with the DeMeo Legacy Series, says Richard Schule, director of clinical education for STERIS. Micheles goals for helping all central service professionals and elevating the sterile processing function align with STERIS Universitys mission. Her materials will provide motivation and practical tools for those who wish to advance themselves and their profession in a meaningful way.

DeMeo adds, How fitting to be paired with a corporation whose values align with mine. My hope is that these materials become another familiar and relevant resource healthcare professionals can count on to help them with continuous improvement efforts.

The first Legacy Series materials, now live on STERIS University (http://university.steris.com/sterisu/index.cfm/michele-demeo-legacy-series/) are a set of 10 introductory videos.* The topics covered by DeMeo in these short films include: certification; benchmarking; instructions for use; professionalism; the role of sterile processing in reducing infection risk; reprocessing critical, semi-critical and non-critical devices; the role of standardization and human factors in reprocessing departments; building a quality education program; building a valued CS-OR relationship; and partnerships for improving patient outcomes.

Many leaders in the healthcare arena know DeMeo. Her considerable knowledge has led to a consulting career, working for clients such as healthcare systems, the United States military, professional associations, medical device manufacturers and magazine editors. She is a fierce proponent of education, certification, and the adoption and use of standards and best practices in all reprocessing departments. She has written hundreds of articles, educational materials and books, all designed to share her knowledge and desire to elevate the sterile processing profession. She has also been awarded such honors as IAHCSMM Educator of the Year, AAMIs first annual Shining Star Award, and ICTs top 25 Whos Who in the US for Infection Prevention.

Now terminally ill, DeMeo is dedicated to helping assure the successful future of her beloved profession. I fell in love with the sterile processing profession, she says. I want to help others understand that anything is possible, and that action, combined with determination and collaboration, will help them achieve their goals. The ultimate compliment would be to inspire someone to accomplish more than I have.
